I arrive at the first Station: “Jesus is condemned to death.” Looking up I see a long stairway leading up to a bronze statue of Jesus staring down at me. Around him stand a group of fierce Roman soldiers. A multi-lingual sign reads: “Please go up the stairs on your knees.” I do, even though there are large puddles of water on the steps. As I crawl to the top and come closer to the statue of Jesus facing me, I get a deep sense of being like Peter. The figure of a small boy carrying a bowl and towel reminds me of Pilate’s washing his hands in front of the crowds and declaring his innocence. Who is innocent in front of the innocent One? Who does not participate in his condemnation?
