Nouwen telescopes in his introduction the unique soulscape awaiting the reader in this book: "When I was hit by a van while hitchhiking and found myself, soon after, faced with the possibility of death, I felt more than ever that what I was living then I had to live for others....I feel that this interruption, which could have been the last, gave me a new knowledge of God that contrasted radically with what I had learned so far.
